wow, a whole year has gone by and nothing much has changed except...! now i have something you can download: glider 0.2.zip

this new achievement will make me more enthusiastic about actually getting it done.

fireplace and gasp... outside!

the first house is complete. three more await. each house will be unique in appearance and gameplay.

what to expect from the final version:
- another form to fold into - the paper copter. instead of vents providing lift, fans will make you spin, sending upward or downward.
- vaccuum cleaner - sucks you under to your death.
- balloons - instead of making balloons enemies, they are platforms to rest your plane on. then fans and heaters can blow them around.
- outside lift sources - leaf blower and bbq.
- chain reactions - turn on a heater, heater lifts balloon into sharp object, pop scares fish, fish jumps out of bowl and hits...
- more music.
- tinfoil? - i was impressed with glider pro's tinfoil power-up. it will just be protection from fire, not armor for collisions, and it'll weigh you down considerably.
- enemies? - i'm not sure if i want enemies. there will be more moving hazards of sorts for sure, though.
- lots of things i haven't thought up yet.

be excited.

lots of new things: sound! music! the ability to transform! stairs! open vents! many new rooms!

i've entered the phase where i can just create and not worry about code. i've got a workflow now, so all i have to do is just create more rooms, graphics, and sounds, with minor amounts of new code. here's a video on youtube that shows a bit of the gameplay. i took it before i made many of the rooms you see above. the best thing in the game so far is the fish (pictured in lower left screen). the phone rings and startles the fish. it jumps out of the fish bowl and then lands back it in. the fish is not a new concept for glider, but having a phone scare it, is.

i have so many ideas just waiting to happen. it's so exciting. since second grade, i've wanted to program a remake of glider. now i just need somebody to tell me how to make stand-alone apps from python scripts.

december 22, 2008

i stayed up until five in the morning coding. the project has come a long way. death and respawn work perfectly, there is a lot of collision detection now, a bit of sound, and more rooms. below is a new one.

the black bar at the bottom will display text, as you are playing, about various objects you fly near. p.s. the paper stuck on the fridge is a power up letting the player fold into a different airplane (not implemented yet). there are cameos, from glider 4.0 in this game. the jar of grease, for example, and the clock. neither behave like 4.0. they are just scenery.

november 9, 2008

glider has been recoded to make it cleaner. there's no collision detection right now, but there are more rooms.

p.s. computer is now plugged in in the office, there are two graphics for heater vents (left and right), and there are new sprites and other things. yay.

july 20, 2008

a new room. a living room. playable.

clocks don't do anything yet. maybe they won't at all. i don't think my glider is going to have points.

june 13, 2008

lightswitches work. your paper airplane must fall on them to switch them off, and must rise upward into them to switch them on.

apparently, heaters are sources of light (laughs). and the computer is still battery powered (other laughs).

april fools, 2008

you can die! collision detection works. the first room is done.

i wonder how that computer stays on.

march 27, 2008

heater vents are now in place. yay!

vents work perfectly.

I'm so excited. and the floor kills you and there's even a cute little respawn animation of a 12 step folding of the glider from an 8.5 by 11. you can still travel off both ends of the screen without anything happening and there's only one room. i'm so surprised at how easy this is becoming. although, i'm kicking myself because it's coded so poorly. thank goodness for fast computers and big hard drives.

stay tuned...

march 25, 2008

so far, i have basically, a falling glider with no heater vents, only capable of moving left and right. it's not coded very cleanly:

glider after the first day (march 25, 2008)

at this point, i have no downloads to offer because a) what i've done is not fun or gamelike, and b) i don't know how to make an executable. this game will run on all major OSs - one of the reasons for coding it in python.

march 24, 2008

i'm remaking glider by john calhoun. i'm going more the glider 4.0 than the glider pro route. i've been coding in python with the pygame libraries and pretending i know how to program.

i'm going for a look like this:

glider will look like this hopefully.

i might have to get someone else to help me program. i never really got comfortable with classes and proper structure. i'm not a programmer, just an artist.

glider will have outside "rooms" like glider pro but with a little more realism (aka no outside vents)

outside.

that's all, folks... for now...
