great lengths download

this is not a film with a narrative. it's just a test.

i wanted to see if there was a way to shoot twice as many pictures on a roll. mostly for the purpose of animation. obviously, the pictures would need to be twice as small (half of 8-perf = 4-perf).

workflow:
i blocked half the gate with tape,
marked the first frame with sharpie,
shot the roll,
rewound the film almost all the way,
reloaded it, but offset by 4-perfs,
shot the roll again,
split the shots in half in photoshop,
and finally animated them.

conclusion: time waster. money saver. since you're using the edges of the lens which are never as good as the center, it may not be worth it. there's very slight chromatic aberration. i shot at f8 so I didn't see much vignetting. i think I'll use this technique again at some point, even with all its flaws.

[update]
i changed the gate so that instead of blocking 18mm on the left or right half, it now has 9mm masks on both sides, making it possible to use the center of the lens.
