the set

i built this set for the sole purpose of photographing it. what you see is a combination of polaroid cameras, christmas tree ornaments filled with red food coloring, some helvetica letrasets, and an unknown skull found at the beach. it was set up on top of my toilet at around one o'clock pm. i was expecting that the sun would shine through the bathroom window at around three pm. by the time the sun was in the right position (assuming the earth is the center of the universe), it was actually around seven thirty pm. we peed in the shower until then.

i shot this on your average boring lifeless film stock but used photoshop to give it character. i used a little over one roll of film, using multiple lenses (mostly a 28mm), to make sure i captured it thoroughly.

click the image for a video. i shot four 50mm f1.4 photos (but before the lighting was good) and morphed between them to simulate a rack focus. i'm offering a less-than-full-resolution version, because the native size was 1263 x 860. as usual, film grain/dust/hairs, jiggle, and flicker were added. you can tell it's not a real rack focus but it is beatiful nonetheless.
